Ted Cruz is apologizing for telling a joke about vice president Joe Biden just days after his son, Beau Biden, passed away on Saturday.
Recycling a joke he’s used before, the GOP presidential candidate told the joke at a speaking engagement in Michigan on Wednesday.
"You know the nice thing? You don't need a punch line,” he said of the vice president, USA Today reports.
Cruz got a lot of backlash for joking at the expense of Biden during a time of immense grief in his family’s life. Beau died at just 46 after battling brain cancer.
The criticism prompted Cruz to take to Facebook to apologize, writing, “It was a mistake to use an old joke about Joe Biden during his time of grief, and I sincerely apologize. The loss of his son is heartbreaking and tragic, and our prayers are very much with the Vice President and his family.”
Beau was the oldest son of Joe and his first wife, the late Neilia Hunter.
