Authorities have said that a second prison employee has been arrested in connection with the escape of Richard Matt and David Sweat.
CNN noted that Gene Palmer, a 57-year-old correction officer, was taken into custody and believed to have supplied some of the tools used in the inmates’ escape.
The guard allegedly gave a flat-head screwdriver and a wrench to one of the escapees in exchange for paintings, which he is alleged to have later destroyed.
His attorney said that he has been charged with one count of promoting dangerous prison contraband, two counts of destroying evidence and one count of official misconduct.
Palmer's arrest follows that of fellow prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who is also accused of supplying Matt and Sweat with tools and hiding them inside hamburger meat. Palmer is alleged to have then given the meat to the convicts.
As previously reported, both Matt and Sweat broke out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York earlier this month.
A manhunt for the convicted killers in the Adirondack Mountains is currently underway.
