NYPD officer shot in the face dies of injuries

Brian Moore, the New York City police officer who was shot in the face and had been hospitalized for the past two days, died on Monday.

Moore, 25, had been in critical condition since he was rushed to an emergency room after the shooting that occurred in the Queens borough Saturday night.

The New York Times reported that Moore and his partner were patrolling an area of Queens Village when they noticed a man adjusting his waistband. They decided to question him but before they could the man, identified as Demetrius Blackwell, 35, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Moore in the cheek. He sustained brain trauma and his family made the difficult choice to take him off life support Monday morning.

After news of his death broke, police commissioner William J. Bratton spoke about the loss of the young officer. He said that the death is a great loss of “an extraordinary young man” for the entire police department.

The New York Daily News noted that Moore is the first cop to be killed in the line of duty in the city since officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were executed.

Blackwell was arrested after the shooting and charged with attempted murder, a charge that will now most likely be upgraded to murder.

Moore leaves being a father, uncle and cousins, who have all served as police officers.
