Jury decides Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will be put to death

After about 14 hours of deliberations, the jury in the penalty phase of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has decided that he will be sentenced to death.

Boston.com reported that the 12-person jury read the verdict Friday afternoon sentencing Tsarnaev to death for his part in the 2013 bombings.

Last month, the same jury found the 21-year-old guilty of 30 counts related to the bombing. Of those 30 counts, 17 were capital counts that the jurors needed to consider.

On April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker bombs exploded near the finish line during the Boston Marathon. Three people, Krystle Campbell, 29; Martin Richard, 8; and Lingzi Lu, 23 were killed and more than 260 others were injured.

Tsarnaev was seen on camera placing a backpack on the sidewalk near a crowd of people just before the bombs went off.

He and his older brother, Tamerlan, later led police on manhunt in which an MIT police officer and the elder sibling were killed. Tsarnaev was later found and apprehended.

Many of the victims’ family members and those who were wounded, as well as Tsarnaev's family were present in the courtroom when the verdict was read.

The convicted bomber’s lawyers will likely appeal the decision.
