Four people were killed Friday morning after a small plane crashed onto Interstate 285 near Atlanta.
WGCL reported that the crash happened near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at about 10 a.m. shortly after it left the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.
Lanes in both directions have been shut down causing major backups. The eastbound lanes closed at Exit 29/Ashford Dunwoody Road and the westbound lanes closed at Exit 34/Chamblee Tucker Road.
The Federal Aviation Administration has said that the aircraft was a single-engine Piper PA-32.
Some motorists who were traveling on the highway at the time told WSB-TV that they felt the impact from the crash and said it sounded like a bomb went off. One witness said he saw a propeller come off as it hit the roadway.
So far there has been no word on where the plane was headed and details about the passengers killed have not yet been released.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.
