Authorities in California have been involved in negotiations and a standoff with a man they believe shot and killed his neighbor before taking his two children and wife hostage in their apartment.
The Associated Press reported that police have been in a standoff with the alleged gunman at a complex in Southern California since a shooting occurred in the parking lot Thursday morning. Police Capt. Lon Turner of the San Diego County city of Chula Vista said the fatal shooting happened after the two neighbors had an altercation.
Other tenants at the complex called 911 about the gunfire and were later evacuated from the building.
Law enforcement officials said that after the shooting the suspect fled to his apartment and barricaded himself and the hostages inside.
CNS noted that crisis counselors spoke with the gunman who claimed he was suicidal. However, at some point he ended all communication with them.
"We have had on-again, off-again negotiations with the suspect," Turner said. "We want to re-establish communications. We want to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution."
The exact details about what sparked the dispute in the first place have not been given.
