Fire erupts at GE Appliance Park in Kentucky

A four-alarm fire broke out Friday morning at a manufacturing facility in General Electric Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Courier Journal noted that the firefighters had to battle the blaze in Building Six and required assitance at the GE complex from nearby departments. Metrosafe spokeswoman Jody Duncan said that the building has been evacuated and there are no serious injuries to report.

Homes within a half a mile were ordered to stay indoors because of the thick smoke and many residents said that it was raining ash outside.

The fire reportedly affected primarily one building used for storage and leased to private suppliers, but so far GE officials have not commented on it.

"I hate to see that fire," said Tom Burch, who retired as a GE production manager 24 years ago. "From what I can see, (the building) is totally destroyed."

There is no word yet on what caused the blaze, but more details will be released to the media after Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer’s press conference set for later this morning.
