Authorities have said that a Czech tourist was attacked by a polar bear in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard on Thursday.
Reuters reported that Jakub Moravec, 37, who was camping with a group, was attacked after the bear got through a fence around their campsite. He suffered injuries to his arm, neck and face and was flown to a hospital for treatment.
"Now I am fine. I have some scratches in the face, on one arm and on the back. But I feel fine," he told a local newspaper after the attack.
Moravec and his companions are in town for Friday’s eclipse. The Associated Press noted that so many people traveled to Svalbard to see it and that lodging has actually been sold out for years.
The eclipse is expected to last a total of three minutes.
Tourists were warned about polar bears roaming in the area and have been told to carry firearms.
The bear that attacked Moravec was shot dead.
