Angelina Jolie has revealed in a New York Times op/ed overnight that she has decided to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes in her effort to decrease her odds of cancer.
This surgery, which she underwent last week, comes almost two years after she revealed she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy.
In the op/ed called “Diary of a Surgery,” the mother of six revealed her doctor found markers that could be a sign of ovarian cancer – which she lost her mother, aunt and grandmother to – in a blood test.
"I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared,” she wrote.
With this surgery, Jolie will go into early menopause. She is taking hormone replacements to maintain a hormonal balance, however.
"The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You know what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing, and it is peaceful,” she wrote.
“It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer,” she continued. “I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, 'Mom died of ovarian cancer.’”
