Authorities have said that two people have still not been accounted for after Thursday’s explosion in the East Village of Manhattan.
Reuters noted that police said 19 people were injured, four critically and two others are missing.
"We are looking into two individuals who are apparently unaccounted for,” a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said.
Local media outlets have said that one of the missing is 23-year-old Nicholas Figueroa.
As previously reported, around 3:20 p.m. a gas explosion occurred at 7th Street and Second Avenue. The blast caused some nearby buildings and structures to catch fire and collapse.
Figueroa’s family said that he was eating lunch in the restaurant where the explosion is believed to have come from. The NYPD has yet to issue an official missing person’s report for him or the other person unaccounted for as they are still trying to locate them.
A preliminary investigation showed evidence that plumbing and gas work inside one of the buildings was to blame. The work was deemed unsatisfactory prior to the blast.
