1 adult, 2 children found dead after standoff in Missouri

Authorities have said that one man and two children were found dead in a Springfield, Missouri apartment after a long standoff with police on Monday.

NBC News reported that Springfield police Lt. Eric Reece said the suspect identified as William R. Williams, 51, and his children Brodie, 4, and Marley, 2, were found dead inside the apartment. The children appear to have been killed in a murder-suicide after police had a 21-hour standoff with their father.

The Associated Press noted that police went to Williams’ residence Sunday around 9:30 p.m. local time to check on the family and encountered the armed suspect. Backup was called in, negotiations began and even robots were brought to the scene to assess the situation before officers could go into the apartment.

"Some of the noises and bangs you heard was us entering the apartment," Reece said.

Unfortunately, the apparent murder-suicide occurred before police could gain access.

The building was sealed off and investigators remained at the apartment throughout the night.
