Just weeks after news of a decline in Ebola cases and believing the disease could be tapering off in West Africa, Sierra Leone has had a spike in the number of cases.
According to Reuters, officials said Friday that a neighborhood in the country’s capital had to be shut down while healthcare workers went door-to-door in the city’s Aberdeen district.
"There was a sudden spike in the number of cases. It's effectively a quarantine there which would typically last 21 days," said OB Sisay, director of the situation room in the National Ebola Response Centre.
There were six new confirmed cases in the Freetown district on Wednesday.
News of the spike is so disheartening especially after the announcement late last month of a major decline in the number of infected parties. As previously reported, because of that drop, children in Liberia were allowed to return to school for the first time since July.
Liberia, along with Guinea are the other countries that have been effected most by the outbreak which began early last year.
The deadly virus has infected tens of thousands of people in the West African region and claimed the lives of more than 9,000 people.
