The mayor of Toledo, Ohio was hospitalized after he went into cardiac arrest while driving.
The Associated Press noted that Mayor D. Michael Collins was driving around the area checking road conditions on Sunday afternoon when he suffered a heart attack. The 70-year-old then lost control of his SUV and hit a utility pole.
The Toledo Blade reported that two fellow city residents, a woman identified as Evelyn Johnson and an unidentified man, saw the crash and sprung into action. They were able to get the mayor out of the vehicle and administered CPR.
Collins was transported to University of Toledo Medical Center to receive treatment and remains in critical condition.
Dr. Christopher Cooper, Cardiologist and Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs at the hospital expressed his gratitude to Johnson and the other citizen who came to the mayor’s aid.
Toledo's City Council President Paula Hicks Hudson has been sworn in and will serve as acting mayor.
Collins' staff has asked for the public for continued prayers during this time.
