A 7-year-old girl survived a deadly plane crash in Kentucky on Friday. She was the only survivor, as her parents, sister and cousin died.
The little girl managed to walk to a nearby home to ask for help. She arrived at Larry Wilkins’ home to tell him that her parents were already dead and he called 911 for her.
“The little girl come to my door,” Wilkins told NBC News. “She was bleeding pretty bad, her legs were bleeding, her face had a bloody nose. She was barefoot, only had one sock on.”
Police said that the family was from Nashville, Illinois. The victims were Marty Gutzler, 49, Kimberly Gutzler, 45; their daughter, Piper, 9; and Piper’s cousin, Sierra Walder, 14. The 7-year-old girl’s name was not released.
According to the Associated Press, the FAA confirmed that the Piper PA-34 plane took off from Tallahassee Regional Airport in Florida and was heading to Mount Vernon, Illinois. It did report engine trouble while flying over southwestern Kentucky. A half hour after the report, Wilkins called 911.
“This girl came out of the wreckage herself and found the closest residence and reported the plane crash,” Sgt. Dean Patterson of the Kentucky State Police told the AP. “It's a miracle in a sense that she survived it, but it's tragic that four others didn't.”
