George Clooney is ready to take on television, although he’s not quite ready to star in a series just yet. Instead, he’s going to produce a drama for Showtime that’s all about the business that has made him one of the most famous men in the world.

Following a bidding war among networks, Showtime came out on top for The Studio, a Sony Pictures Television production that is set during the early 1990s. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the setting is a movie studio run by two friends that has just been bought by a media conglomerate. They struggle for power in their new situation, even if it means running each other over.
Peter Tolan (Rescue Me) is writing and executive producing. Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher, Moneyball) has been tapped to direct the pilot and will executive produce with Tolan, Clooney and Clooney’s frequent producing partner Grant Heslov.
The Studio is part of Heslov and Clooney’s overall deal with Sony Pictures TV. It is their first TV project since TNT’s Memphis Beat.
THR reports that Showtime has only given the show a script commitment, but also agreed to take a big penalty if the show doesn’t move forward.
