Easter just isn’t the same in the U.K. without Cadbury Creme Eggs, so when the company secretly changed the recipe, people were understandably outraged. To add salt to the wound, boxes even come with one less egg.
Earlier this week, The Sun reported that Kraft, the company’s new American owners, changed the type of chocolate used in the recipe. Traditionally, Cadbury used Dairy Milk chocolate fro the shell. Instead, Kraft will use a “standard cocoa mix chocolate.”
“It's no longer Dairy Milk. It's similar, but not exactly Dairy Milk. We tested the new one with consumers. It was found to be the best one for the Creme Egg, which is why we've used it this year,” a Kraft spokesman told the Sun, reports The Guardian. “The Creme Egg has never been called the Cadbury's Dairy Milk Creme Egg. We have never played on the fact that Dairy Milk chocolate was used.”
Still, people took to Instagram and Twitter to complain. To make matters worse, some noted that the new boxes only have five eggs instead of six, notes Time.
Cadbury did take to Twitter to explain its decision, confirming that five-packs will cost slightly less and blamed the move on “economic factors.”

Cadbury was also criticized during the Christmas season for not selling chocolate coins, another U.K. tradition. Clearly, Kraft is not getting off on the right foot across the pond.
