A passenger on a Southwest flight that left from San Francisco on Tuesday morning had a baby while thousands of feet up in the air.
Not only did the parents of the newborn baby get a surprise of a lifetime when she went into labor, but the flight crew and passengers on flight 623 did as well.
The most surprising part of it all is that the passengers didn’t know what was going on until they heard the sound of a baby crying and the mother told a flight attendant, “I just had a baby.”
Passenger Ken Marshall told the LA Times that everyone worked together to make this miracle happen. A doctor and nurse who were also passengers got up to help the mother and another passenger provided scissors to cut the umbilical chord.
LAFD spokesman Erik Scott said the doctor and nurse stayed by her side until the plane diverted from Phoenix to Los Angeles so the plane could be properly cleaned before new passengers boarded.
When they landed, paramedics boarded the plane and transported the family to a nearby hospital.
Southwest Airlines spokesperson Emily Samuels toldKTLA the woman went into labor “shortly” after take off.
When the pilot announced the birth, witnesses say everyone cheered.
