Survey finds e-cigarette use growing among teens

While the debate about electronic cigarettes being harmless or addictive continues, a new survey has found that more teens than ever are vaping.

The New York Times noted that the federal study found tobacco smoking among teenagers has declined, but the use of e-cigarettes among young people has grown and is increasing.

The study, which was published Tuesday in the journal Pediatrics, revealed that more than 30 percent of the 1,900 teens surveyed in Hawaii admitted to trying e-cigs in the past month. Of those, 17 percent said they were regular e-cig users, 12 percent used both e-cigs and tobacco cigarettes, 3 percent said they only use tobacco cigarettes and 68 percent are nonusers.

The study also found a decline in drug use among the teens surveyed. About 6 percent said that they have taken a prescription drug. That number is down from 9.5 percent a decade ago.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will release a similar study next year.
