Former 7th Heaven actor Stephen Collins is hitting the media trail in a last-ditch effort to save his career. Following a lengthy public admission of committing sexual assault against young girls, he sat down with Katie Couric.
Collins told Couric that the last time he did anything wrong was in 1994 and that he never wanted people to know about claims of sexuual assault against him.
“I had put that stuff behind me,” Collins said. “Most people get to, or have to or choose to hide it. This came out. I didn’t choose this to come out. I didn’t want to have to deal with these things publicly.”
The interview with Couric, which will air during ABC News’ 20/20 Friday, follows his 1,000 word statement to People Magazine on Wednesday.
“I had dealt with them very, very strongly, and committedly, in my private life, but I think, I’m a human being with flaws and I’ve done everything to address it,” Collins explained in his sit-down with Couric.
Indeed, had TMZ not leaked a 2012 audio recording of Collins admitting to a therapist that he had sexually assaulted young girls, the public would likely have never known about it. The recording was made during the ongoing divorce case with his estranged wife, Faye Grant.
Collins, 67, admitted in his People statement that he had sexual encounters with three young victims between 1973 and 1994.
“I’m a flawed person,” Collins told Couric. “And in the church, it’s actually one of the things I love about the church… it’s really one of the main things about the Christian faith, is you know, Christ said in so many ways, ‘bring me that … which about you is broken, bring it,’ and most people are broken in some way.”
