It turns out that Angelina Jolie isn’t the only person mega-producer Scott Rudin insults in his emails with Sony executives. He also made racially insensitive jokes about President Barack Obama.
In the latest round of Sony emails that have surfaced, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal asks the No Country For Old Men Oscar winner what she should ask the president when she goes to a breakfast hosted by DreamWorks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg. According to Buzzfeed, Rudin’s first response was “Would he like to finance some movies.”
“I doubt it. Should I ask him if he liked DJANGO?” Pascal replies.
Rudin then writes back, “12 YEARS.” That leads to a back-and-forth between Pascal and Rudin, in which the two list movies that only feature African Americans.
“Ride-along,” Rudin suggests at one point. “I bet he likes Kevin Hart.”
According to Variety, another leaked email has Sony executive Clint Culpepper calling Hart - one of the studio’s biggest box office stars - a “whore.” Hart’s next film, The Wedding Ringer, will be released by Sony.
“If he doesn’t do his normal routine his film will not open as well and his brand will appear diminished and he will- in fact – be f—ing himself because we have his next 2 immediate films,” Culpepper wrote to Pascal.
As for Rudin, he has apologized for offending anyone in a statement to Deadline.
“Private emails between friends and colleagues written in haste and without much thought or sensitivity, even when the content of them is meant to be in jest, can result in offense where none was intended,” Rudin said. “I made a series of remarks that were meant only to be funny, but in the cold light of day, they are in fact thoughtless and insensitive — and not funny at all. To anybody I’ve offended, I’m profoundly and deeply sorry, and I regret and apologize for any injury they might have caused.”
These emails surfaced just after a nasty exchange between Pascal and Rudin leaked, showing how the Steve Jobs movie eventually broke down at the studio. In one email, Rudin called Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat.”
