Canadian police said that Tuesday’s mass killings of two small children and six adults is linked to domestic violence.
The Associated Press noted that during a news conference, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said that the motive for the slayings appears to be domestic-violence related.
"It appears to be an extreme case of domestic violence gone awry," Knecht said. "The scene ... has been described as chaotic, horrific. Particularly when there's children involved, it has a tremendous impact on our folks."
On Monday evening, officers arrived at a residence and found the body of Cyndi Duong, 37, shot to death. Authorities then received a call to check on a man who the caller described as suicidal. When police arrived at that residence, the male was not there.
Law enforcement officials went back to that same home on Tuesday and found the bodies of seven more victims, including two children. Their identities have not yet been released.
The man police believe is responsible for the murders was later found dead at a restaurant from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
CBC News reported that the suspect was previously arrested in 2012 for domestic violence.
Neighbors who live next door to one of the houses where the victims were found said that they heard arguments and fighting coming from inside the home.
