J.K. Rowling confirms that there were Jewish, LGBT students at Hogwarts

Between writing new Harry Potter stories for Pottermore, writing the scripts for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and writing her Coroman Strike novels, one would think that J.K. Rowling doesn’t have time for fans. But she somehow does and took the time to answer questions on Twitter Tuesday.

Several fans asked about the diversity of Hogwarts, the wizarding school Harry Potter attended. She said that the school was open to all faiths and “of course” there were LGBT students.

As the Huffington Post notes, when one fan asked if Hogwarts was a safe place for LGBT students, she replied, “But of course.” She then included an image with text that read, “If Harry Potter taught us anything, it’s that no one should live in a closet.”

Another fan asked if there were Jews at Hogwarts and she revealed that Anthony Goldstein of Ravenclaw was Jewish. Of course, he wasn’t the only one. He’s just the only name she could remember off the top of her head.

Rowling addressed multiple questions about religions represented at Hogwarts:

Rowling has been posting new Potter stories on her site, Pottermore, which look at the backgrounds of characters in her famous stories. She also recently revealed the name of one character she wished she didn’t kill.
