When HBO announced that it would finally offer HBO Go to non-HBO subscribers, the network forgot one big thing: a release date. Now, thanks to a leaked internal memo, we know that the network hopes to launch the service by April.
Fortune obtained an internal memo, which showed that HBO has killed a project called “Maui.” It’s believed that this is the stand-alone HBO Go service with technology built in-house. However, HBO has decided to go with MLB Advanced technology to develop the program. That technology is also used by the WWE Network and others.
The memo reveals that HBO hopes that the service will be up in April, which would be just in time for the new season of Game of Thrones, easily the network’s most popular program.
HBO does have to make sure that HBO Go outages - like the ones that happened during GoT and True Detective last season - don’t happen again, especially once non-HBO subscribers can use it. HBO chief technology officer Otto Berkes recently resigned and now HBO is going with MLB Advanced.
