Former President George W. Bush weighed in on the grand jury’s decision not to indict police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner and even he found it puzzling.
In an interview with CNN set to air on Sunday, the former Commander-in-Chief said that the verdict was "hard to understand."
“I haven’t seen all the details, but it’s sad that race continues to play such an emotional, divisive part of life,” he said.
Thousands have protested in the streets of New York since the decision was announced on Wednesday.
The choice not to bring charges against the officer for the chokehold death followed another grand jury’s choice not to indict a white officer in the shooting death of black 18-year-old Michael Brown.
Bush added that he recently had dinner with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the two talked about the aftermath and uproar of the grand jury’s decision in Ferguson, Missouri.
He said that she told him many African-Americans do not trust law enforcement officials.
“Which is a shame,” Bush said, “because law enforcement’s job is to protect everybody.”
