Bill Cosby finally spoke on Friday, following weeks of mounting sexual allegations against him. While the comedian again refused to address them directly, he explained how he expects the black media to cover his situation.
Cosby spoke to The New York Post on Friday in a phone interview from his Massachusetts home. The 77-year-old said that attorneys Martin Singer and John B. Schmitt told him not to speak with reporters about the ongoing situation. Still, he said he hopes that African-American media would be neutral.
“Let me say this,” Cosby told the Post. “I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that you have to go in with a neutral mind.”
When asked how he was holding up while more and more women continue to come forward, he replied, “Love and the strength of womanhood.”
“Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love,” he continued.
The interview took place just a day after the latest allegation, which came from supermodel Beverly Johnson. She claims that Cosby drugged her at his New York home during an audition for the Cosby Show in the 1980s. Unlike other women, she did not claim that Cosby raped her, although she said that Cosby was angry with her after she asked him, “You are a motherf***er aren’t you?” At that point, he pulled her out of his home and got her a taxi.
Over 20 women have now come forward, claiming that they were drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby. He is facing a lawsuit from one woman who claims that she was assaulted in 1974, when she was 15.
