One of the most famous images from Hollywood history shows Sophia Loren sitting next to Jayne Mansfield and the Italian actress is obviously worried for Mansfield. Not for her health, but worried that Mansfield’s boobs might fall out of her dress.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly over the weekend, Loren explained what she was thinking at that moment, when a photographer caught her looking down at Mansfield’s chest during a Beverly Hills party 57 years ago.
Loren said that the party had been organized by Paramount to welcome her to Hollywood and there were several other superstars in attendance. But Mansfield showed up last and went right to her table.
“She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen. Look at the picture,” Loren said. “Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table.”
Loren also chatted with EW about several other major images from her career, including winning an Oscar for the iconic Italian film Two Women, but that Mansfield image is the most famous.
“Actually, many, many times I am given this photo to autograph it,” Loren told the magazine. “And I never do. I don’t want to have anything to do with that. And also out of respect for Jayne Mansfield because she’s not with us anymore.”
Loren was recently celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival. The American Film Institute is also set to celebrate her career this month. Her memoir, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: My Life, is out this week.
