NBC to cancel 'A To Z' and 'Bad Judge' as new sitcom woes continue

Fall 2014 has not been kind to new sitcoms. NBC has cancelled both of its new Thursday sitcoms, although they will get a consolation prize. The remaining produced episodes of Bad Judge and A To Z will air.

Both sitcoms suffered major ratings drops this Thursday, even though it was the first time they didn’t have to face Thursday Night Football on CBS. Bad Judge dropped to a 0.9 18-49 rating, while A To Z got an anemic 0.7 in the demo.

However, unlike ABC’s Manhattan Love Story, which was pulled from the schedule immediately, Bad Judge and A To Z will finish out their initial 13-episode orders.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Bad Judge, which stars Kate Walsh, will finish filming three more episodes, while A To Z will film two more. Both have only eight episodes left to air.

Bad Judge was a production from Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez. Ferrell is 0-2 with NBC sitcoms this season, since Mission Control was cancelled before it even got to air.

A To Z stars Ben Feldman and Cristin Milioti and was narrated by Katey Sagal. The series counted Rashida Jones as one of its executive producers.

Sitcoms have been the clear losers of the season so far. Over at Fox, Mulaney has had its freshman season cut to only 13 episodes. CBS’ The McCarthys began with a 1.9 18-49 rating and 8.8 million viewers, which is down compared to other recent CBS premieres.

So far, the only successful new sitcom of the season has been ABC's Black-ish, which has earned a full season.

NBC does have a few other comedies to schedule this midseason, including Parks and Recreation’s final season. The network has also given Debra Messing’s Mysteries of Laura a full season.

So far, three shows we picked to get cancelled have been canned.
