Although its ratings aren’t anything to be proud of, Fox is giving The Mindy Project a nearly full third season.
Fox had initially only ordered 15 episodes of the Mindy Kaling-starring series, but Deadline is now reporting that Fox put in an order for six more. That will bring its third season to 21 episodes in total, just one shy of a typical full season.
Mindy, which also stars Chris Messina, only drew a 1.1 18-49 rating this Tuesday, following a new episode of New Girl. Still, Fox believes that the show’s strong female appeal is a major reason to keep it alive. It is among the Top 5 shows in the Women 18-34 demographic.
In other Mindy news, E! News is reporting that Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, Guardians of the Galaxy) has been booked for an upcoming guest spot. He will play Alex, the man who took Mindy’s virginity in college and is now a tech millionaire.
Fox’s other on-the-bubble sitcom, Mulaney, isn’t faring as well as Mindy. Earlier this week, the Sunday sitcom was moved from 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It already had its 16-episode order cut to 13.
