C-SPAN’s Washington Journal call-in debate show took a surprisingly ugly turn on Thursday.
Anthony from San Diego called into the show, hosted by Steve Scully, to respond to the Republicans’ sweeping victories across the country during Tuesday’s midterm elections. He started off calmly enough, asking that Republicans keep to a moderate agenda, or Hillary Clinton might be elected president in 2016.
“This is about race,” Anthony continued. "The Republicans hate that n***** Obama.”
At that moment, Scully quickly cut him off and moved on to the next caller. “You can certainly make your point, but you cross the line when you use language like that," he told the next caller, adding, "And so to our viewers and listeners, I want to apologize."
A C-SPAN rep told The New York Daily News that there is no time delay during the call-in portion of the debate show.
“Regarding distasteful language: When a caller makes ad hominem attacks or uses indecent language or obviously racist language, program hosts are certainly permitted to step in,” a description of the show reads. “Given that this involves quick judgment during a live television production, it's an imperfect process.”
