Elizabeth Taylor may have had a collection of jewels, but Lauren Bacall had a treasure trove of art. The Bacall estate and Bonhams in New York will be auctioning off hundreds of pieces Bacall collected during the second half of the 20th century.
The auction house said that the 700-piece collection will be up for auction in March 2015.
Bacall’s collection includes eight works from British sculptor Henry Moore. Two of the works will be auctioned off in November during Bonhams’ November impressionist and Modern art sale. The Big Sleep actress was a big fan of his works and finally met him in 1975.
Many items were on display at the Los Angeles home she shared with Humphrey Bogart, others at her country home in Amagansett, New York and some at The Dakota residence she shared with second husband Jason Robards.
Bacall had many pieces of African art on display at The Dakota. She had an interest in African art since she went to the continent with Bogart when he made The African Queen.
Other artists represented in the collection are David Hockney, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Alexander Calder. The collection has been valued at $3 million.
“We felt and continue to feel that Bonhams is professional and inviting yet not intimidating. Perfect for us,” Leslie Bacall said in a statement.
Bacall died last month at the age of 89. She received an Honorary Oscar in 2010 and won two Tonys.
