Studio Mir, the South Korean animation company behind The Legend of Korra, has entered into a four-year contract with DreamWorks Animation.
According to Variety, the partnership will produce four 2-D animated TV shows over the span of the deal’s four-year span. Each series is currently set to be 78 episodes long. The two studios will discuss the on and offline distribution of each show in due time.
Korean studios are often subcontracted by bigger studios for Western animation projects, but they’re rarely credited as co-producers or co-owners of an IP. Indeed, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, this is the first large-scale co-production of its kind. The deal was sealed when Mark Taylor and Joaquim Dos Santos visited Korea from August 11-14.
The Legend of Korra, Studio Mir’s biggest project thus far, just ended its third season. When the season drew low ratings for Nickelodeon, the network pulled the show from broadcasting and streamed episodes nine through thirteen online instead.
