Diane Sawyer said goodnight to her loyal audience on ABC World News last night, marking the end of an era for the ABC News broadcast. Sawyer, who was the only woman anchoring any of the networks’ national news broadcasts, is stepping down.
Back in June, ABC News announced that Sawyer would be stepping down, with David Muir replacing her as anchor and managing editor. Sawyer was all smiles as she signed off last night after five years on the job.
“He is my friend and you are in strong and steady hands,” she said of Muir.
Sawyer, 68, also said that she is sticking with ABC News and will continue reporting for the network.
“On a personal note, as I said, I’m not going far,” Sawyer reminded viewers. “Just down the hall, up the stairs and I am not slowing down, but gearing up in a new way, already at work on some of the stories that take you into the real lives around us, the ones we rarely get to see.”
Muir will be taking over the broadcast on Sept. 2 and will stay with 20/20. As previously reported, he will be working with new executive producer Almin Karamehmedovic.
