Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin did a rare joint interview last week that was just posted online. During the fireside chat, the billionaires covered a wide range of subjects, including how much work the average American does.
Page said that people are actually working too much, suggesting that it should be possible for someone working a minimum wage job to maintain a good standard of living.
"If you really think about the things you need to make yourself happy -- housing, security, opportunity for your kids ... it's not that hard for us to provide those things," Page told moderator and fellow billionaire Vinod Khosla, reports ABC News. "The idea that everyone needs to work frantically to meet peoples' needs is not true.”
Page noted that we should have a society where robots and machines do more work, creating a “time of abundance.” However, since people want to feel needed, they work in unnecessary industries that hurt the environment, according to Page.
“You just reduce work time,” Page suggested, notes Mashable. Offering more vacation time and ending the traditional 40-hour work week could be one solution to the issue. “And then, if you add slightly less employment, you can adjust and people will still have jobs,” he said.
