Glee’s popularity is starting to drop off, which could lead some to wonder if that final sixth season should even happen. The ratings are so bad that Fox has reportedly scaled back its season five episode order.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glee’s fifth season will only be 20 episodes, with Fox dropping the final two episodes ordered. While the lower ratings may have something to do with it, it could also be the fact that the show’s production schedule was delayed due to Cory Monteith’s sudden death last summer.
E! News notes that even with the recent excitement of the show’s 100th episode, the Lea Michele-starring show is now drawing under 3 million viewers. Its most recent episode only drew a 0.9 rating in the key 18-49 demographic.
Glee has already been renewed for a sixth season, which co-creator Ryan Murphy said will be its last. THR notes that there are rumors that the season may include 24 episodes.
“Glee is still a great property to have on our air," Fox COO Joe Earley told THR. “There have been some scheduling challenges … but what we see is still an incredibly popular show with a lot of time-shifting.”
Glee airs on Tuesdays on Fox at 8 p.m.
