Chelsea Handler's Oscars tweets draw criticism, accusations of racism

Chelsea Handler was The Huffington Post's guest tweeter during the Academy Awards on Sunday night and some people felt a few of her tweets went too far, enough that even HuffPo tried to put distance between the tweets and the site.

Several of her posts were directed at several African-American winners and Angelina Jolie, reports USA Today.

One Tweet simply read, "#AngelinaJole just filed adoption papers #lupitanyongo," after the actress won for Best Supporting Actress. She then essentially repeated herself with another post that said, "#AngelinaJolie's adoption went through #sidneypoitier."

HuffPo Senior Executive Director for Communications Perri Dorset spoke with theGrio and said, "the views (expressed by Handler) are not ours. ...The Huffington Post occasionally has celebrities take over our Twitter handle."

During the State of the Union address, Bill Maher was given control of their Twitter handle.

The New York Post put together a list of the people who took to social media that were not at all happy with Handler's tweets. Most people simply wanted the site and Handler to apologize for the tweets, while some weren't exactly sure what Handler's tweet about her book had in common with the Best Picture winner and were made about that too.

During the Oscars she had found time for self-promotion while congratulating 12 Years A Slave for its Oscar win.
