A Wisconsin baby who vanished Thursday was found Friday morning outside a gas station in western Iowa. The baby, only 6-days-old, was found in a bag crying. Law enforcement officials say that the baby is in excellent health.
Kayden Powell went missing early Thursday from a home in Town of Beloit, Wis. Law enforcement officers at all levels went searching for the baby immediately, since his mother, 18-year-old Brianna Marshall, contacted authorities when she discovered him missing. While there have not been any arrests in the case yet, authorities do have a person of interest.
Town of Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp said that an officer found the baby at a West Branch, Iowa gas station, reports CNN. The baby was wrapped only in blankets and sitting in a tote bag. Even though it was cold, the baby is in fine health.
“In the words of EMS officials, he is in excellent health,” Kopp said at a press conference Friday.
The person of interest is Kristen Rose Smith, who was at the Town of Beloit home and disappeared around the same time as the baby.
According to the Associated Press, the woman had a warrant for her arrest out in Texas and was arrested in Iowa. West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan did confirm that she was taken into custody at another gas station, near where the baby was found.
Local station WKOW reported that Smith has not been charged yet and the FBI is currently investigating the incident. Right now, authorities are just focused on seeing Kayden back with his mother and father.
