Jake Gyllenhaal had to go to the emergency room on Thursday in Los Angeles after he punched a mirror while on the set of his latest movie.
A source working on the set of the movie, Nightcrawler, told People that the actor "flipped out." The source added, "His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital.
A different source close the 32-year-old actor claimed the incident merely happened because Gyllenhaal was in character and had been on set for 18 hours. "The scene was emotionally charged and his character was talking into a mirror and he got so into it, he banged his hands against the mirror and it broke and cut him."
E! News notes Nightcrawler is the film that the Brokeback Mountain actor lost 20 pounds for.
Gyllenhaal told the site in October, "I can only approach things from a mental place." He added, "Like, I'm playing a character who's hungry, figuratively and literally, who's driven in ways to do things and succeed at any cost. And I think that defines a generation in a lot of ways."
Nightcrawler is directed by Dan Gilfroy and also stars Rene Russo and Bill Paxton. Gyllenhaal plays a crime scene journalist in the film.
