Harvey Weinstein is at it again. The movie mogul is ready to fight the Motion Picture Association of America over an R-rating. This time, he has Dame Judi Dench at his disposal, since she stars in the film at the center of the new fight - Stephen Frears' Philomena.
The Weinstein Company posted a video on its official YouTube channel, with Dench playing M, her character in the James Bond film, launching their fight to get Philomena a PG-13. The video was also shown during Weinstein’s appearance on CBS This Morning today.
“Just when you thought I was dead,” Dench tells the viewer, notes The Hollywood Reporter. “I have an important mission for you...Are you familiar with MPAA?”
The video is actually just a small portion of a full video that will be posted Friday. Steve Coogan, who co-stars in the film, appears in the full video.
Weinstein said on CBS This Morning that the film only has two f-words, which is one more than allowed in a PG-13 film. “This is like The King’s Speech,” Weinstein said. “The movie is the gentlest, most wonderful true story, filled with humor and joy. They should just put PG-13 strong language on this and make an exception.”
He said that it is “not gratuitous” and that asking Frears to make any changes to his film is out of the question.
The producer, whose company distributed Best Picture winners The King’s Speech and The Artist, said that he still believes that the MPAA picks on TWC more than other companies. His company recently had a very public fight over the R-rating for last year’s Bully.
