AMC has renewed the western drama Hell on Wheels for a longer fourth season.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the fourth season is being expanded from the previous three seasons' 10 episodes to 13 episodes.
The fourth season will premiere on AMC next summer and will continue airing on Saturdays. The show has been fairly successful on that night, even though networks rarely have new episodes of shows on that night. Hell on Wheels averages 3.3 million viewers for the third season, with DVR numbers included, which was an increase over the previous season.
Showrunner John Wirth will also be returning to the show, The Hollywood Reporter notes. He took the reins in the third season after show creators Joe and Tony Gayton's contracts were not picked up.
The show's success on Saturday nights also likely has to do with the fact that Saturday nights are normally when AMC airs Westerns, so Hell on Wheels fits right in. It used to air on Sundays after The Walking Dead, but tended to lose a lot of the lead-in audience.
AMC President Charlie Collier said, "John Wirth and his team on both sides of the camera delivered a remarkable third season and Hell on Wheels fans responded. We are so proud of this show and congratulate everyone who has contributed to its success."
