In what appears to be an attempt to keep his career safe, Alec Baldwin appeared at the Dreamforce 2013 conference in San Francisco on Wednesday to ease tensions with the gay community after he used a gay slur on camera again. The former 30 Rock actor joked that he has loved some men more than women, although not sexually.
“I want you to be my lover, Matt,” Baldwin told his lawyer from the stage, NBC Bay Area reports. “I love you, Matt. I love you in that way.” At that point, the crowd roared with applause.
When the audience calmed down, Baldwin spoke seriously about his relationships with men. “I've loved men in my life. There are some men I've loved in my life as much, if not more, than the women in my life,” he said, reports TMZ.
“I don't have a sexual preference for men ... but I've loved men,” he clarified. He said that there were three to four men that he’s been close to, but “I don't wanna have a sexual relationship with them.”
Baldwin did seriously talk about his use of the slur, which he did apologize for. However, his MSNBC show Up Late has been suspended indefinitely and he threatened to leave the entertainment industry in a Huffington Post column.
He said that he hopes his three-month-old daughter with wife Hilaria learns to control her temper better than he has. “If in any context in the world that we live in today, if any word is remotely offensive to people, then I'm perfectly willing to learn a different word,” he said.
Dreamforce is a conference hosted by tech company ServiceSource International Inc. and they did consider cancelling Baldwin’s appearance. CEO Michael Smerklo explained that letting Baldwin come was a tough decision, but he and Baldwin agreed that it was important to have him there to talk about key issues.
