DreamWorks Animation bought the expansive Classic Media library of iconic cartoon characters in July 2012 and since then, fans of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Masters of the Universe, Felix the Cat and many more have been left wondering what the studio plans on doing with them. During the Mipcom conference, DWA chief Jeffrey Katzenberg spoke about the studio’s plans, including “reinventing” many of them.
As TheWrap reports, Katzenberg said that the issue isn’t what the studio can do with the 6,100 episodes of programming the library includes, but “...The real opportunity is to take every one of those franchises and reinvent them. And that’s what we will set out to do.”
Also during the talk, Katzenberg mentioned that many of these characters are still known around the world, from Lassie and Mr. Magoo to Dick Tracy and George of the Jungle. Even Archie and Sabrina the Teenage Witch are members of the library, so the studio has a lot of options for its first Classic Media project.
DWA spent $155 million to acquire the library in July 2012. A Mr. Peabody & Sherman is still in the works and now scheduled for March 2014.
During his Mipcom appearance, Katzenberg also said that he offered $75 million for three more Breaking Bad episodes to be produced. He decided it was a bad idea when he saw the ending, but he sees potential in the unique distribution plan he had: putting the episodes online as six-minute shorts over 30 days.
