Greek police trying to find parents of blonde girl found during raid on Roma settlement

Greek police are trying to find the parents of a mysterious blonde girl found at a Roma settlement during a recent raid.

The 4-year-old girl called Maria was found to not be related to the couple taking care of her through DNA testing, BBC News reports. Authorities think that Maria might have been involved in child trafficking or was abducted.

The Smile of the Child charity is currently looking over the girl, who they say was neglected, but was in good health and is doing fine. Greek police have released the girl's picture and believe she may be from eastern or northern Europe.

According to CBS News, the girl's eye and hair color tipped off the police during the raid. Her blue eyes and blonde hair clashes with the normal dark hair and eyes of Roma.

The couple she was found with say that Maria had been "given" to them to look after and had treated her well. Some believe the girl might have been used to beg on the street, due to her blonde appearance. Video evidence at the settlement show Maria has been there for at least two years.

The couple's lawyer Kostas Katsavos said, "Our clients' claim is that 'we never abducted this child, we just adopted', in a way non-legal."

BBC notes the raid was conducted to search for weapons and drugs. Smile of the Child charity is currently showing her picture in hopes of finding her parents.
