A new Asterix hasn't been released in eight years, but that all changes with the Gaul's newest adventure.
Asterix and the Picts has been released in 23 languages and 15 countries on Thursday, The Telegraph reports. The latest adventure is the 35th issue for the French comic.
Asterix and sidekick Obelix visit ancient Scotland for their latest adventure and naturally get up to their old ways.
The series was created by Rene Goscinny in 1959 with artist Albert Underzo. The comic continued despite Goscinny passing away in 1977. Asterix and the Picts was written by Jean-Yves Ferri and drawn by Didier Conrad, making it the first installment not to be directly worked on by either creator.
The two talked with The Guardian about Asterix. Conrad admitted to be "intimidated" with their task because "it's a huge responsibility to live up to the memory we has a young readers of Asterix.
Ferri said that the remaining creator Uderzo decided for the new edition to have "two individuals" work on the French comic. Conrad said that he worried about the comic the whole time because "there was no leniency, it had to be perfect." He added, "So I had to re-do it until it was perfect. We got no extension, the deadline was the deadline."
Conrad also added that while he was drawing the comic, Uderzo "checked every page as I drew. Yes, it was very scary."
The Telegraph notes that Asterix has sold more than 350 million copies worldwide. The comic has been translated into more than 100 languages and dialects. Five million copies of Asterix and the Picts were printed.
