Universal calls ‘Jurassic Park 4’ ‘Jurassic World,’ adds film to mounting summer 2015 releases

Universal Pictures announced Tuesday night that Jurassic Park 4 will officially be titled Jurassic World and set the film’s release date. It is just the latest in Hollywood’s mounting onslaught of blockbusters for 2015.

In a tweet, Universal announced that Jurassic World will be released on June 12, 2015 and in 3D. The release will follow this year’s successful re-issue of the original 1993 film in 3D to mark its 20th anniversary.

JP 4 was announced in January and was set for a June 2014 release, but production was delayed in May, likely to give director Colin Trevorrow more time to get acclimated to the huge project. His only previous feature experience is the indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed.

Universal continued moving ahead with the project and in June, it was rumored that it would be released in 2015 and in 3D. Tuesday’s tweet confirmed that.

Steven Spielberg directed the first two JP films, but handed the franchise over to Joe Johnston for 2001’s Jurassic Park III. The Lincoln director will be executive producing Jurassic World with Frank Marshall as producer. The first two films were loosely based on the novels by Michael Crichton about dinosaurs being brought back to life.

No stars are set for the new film, but Variety is reporting that Bryce Dallas Howard, David Oyelowo and Garrett Hedlund are being considered for lead roles.

2015’s summer schedule is becoming increasingly packed. Jurassic World will hit theaters a week before Assassin’s Creed and Pixar’s Inside Out and two weeks before Terminator 5. Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for May 2015 to open that summer season, while the Superman and Batman movie is set for July 17. Marvel’s Ant Man is set for July 31.
