Two men were arrested on Thursday after a Los Angeles Dodgers fan was stabbed during a fight near San Francisco’s AT&T Park, where the Giants had just beaten the Dodgers.
Jonathan Denver, 24, was stabbed around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, less than 90 minutes after the game ended, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. Police said it happened during a fight between two groups just blocks from the stadium. The Chronicle reports that the fight involved 10 people, with one man carrying a knife and another holding a bat.
The men arrested are ages 21 and 18. Police have not released their names or details on how the fight broke out.
“There is no place for violence,” Sgt. Danielle Newman told the media, NBC Bay Area reports. He said that there will be an increased police presence around the stadium tonight, as the Dodgers and Giants play their final meeting. “The rivalry really should be kept on the field.”
Police Chief Greg Suhr added, “We're still sorting it out but we want to assure the public the bad guys are in custody.”
Denver was a plumbing apprentice and went to Fort Bragg High. “He was just a very nice young man - he wanted to be a plumber. He was very promising. He was one of our best apprentices. It's sad,” his employer, Cas Smith told the Chronicle.
The Dodgers and Giants are in-division rivals and unfortunately, that has become violent among fans. In 2011, Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten outside Dodgers Stadium and two men from San Bernardino County are set to be tried in that case.
