CBS may not have a premiere date for Mike & Molly, but the Melissa McCarthy comedy is still attracting top talent. Oscar winner Susan Sarandon has signed on for a guest role on the sitcom.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sarandon has been cast as J.C. Small, a literary star and someone Molly (McCarthy) looks up to. The network said that the character is a mix of J.D. Salinger, William Faulkner and Gore Vidal. She provides Molly with an unexpected lesson in writing.
As Entertainment Weekly notes, Sarandon and McCarthy recently worked together on the raunchy comedy Tammy, which will hit theaters on July 2, 2014. In that film, co-produced by Will Ferrell, Sarandon plays McCarthy’s grandmother.
Sarandon won her Oscar for Dead Man Walking and has more recently been making guest appearances on TV shows. She has appeared on ER, 30 Rock and The Big C. Her recent films include The Big Wedding, The Last of Robin Hood and Ping Pong Summer.
Mike & Molly has been held back by CBS and is set to premiere in midseason. The show will be entering its fourth season.
