Female superheroes have appeared in recent films, but none have been given their own film. But that’s about to change soon, at least according to Thor actress Natalie Portman. In a recent interview, the Oscar winner hinted that a female superhero film will come from Marvel soon.
“There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming – and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters,” she told SciFiNow, reports SlashFilm.
Portman then notes that Marvel films have had strong female supporting characters, like her own Thor character or Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.
“But they do definitely have strong female characters in them,” she noted. “And I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel, their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterise them; you can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a ‘woman.’”
Marvel certainly does have a strong roster of female superheroes and characters to draw from. In fact, this week, it was reported that the studio is working on a series about Agent Carter, Hayley Atwell’s character from Captain America: The First Avenger. Plus, there are female lead characters in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series that debuts on ABC Tuesday.
In Portman’s interview, she also expressed disappointment that Thor: The Dark World was not directed by Patty Jenkins, who would have been the first woman to direct a Marvel movie. Ultimately, she was replaced by Alan Taylor. She said that Taylor was “really wonderful,” but it was “bittersweet” to see Jenkins leave.
Thor: The Dark World hits theaters on Nov. 8.
