Former Saturday Night Live castmember Andy Samberg is returning to TV this fall on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a new sitcom from the Parks & Recreation team. In new interviews, Samberg talked about the series and one of SNL’s upcoming hosts - Miley Cyrus.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine centers on a police squad and was developed by Michael Schur and Dan Goor, the men behind Parks & Rec. Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Chelsea Peretti and Stephanie Beatriz co-star with Samberg.
In a chat with The NY Times, Samberg admitted that he thought he would be taking some time to relax after leaving SNL and not grab a leading role. “I was thinking I was going to be doing more dabbling, and maybe even a little more relaxing,” he said. But the chance to work with the Parks & Rec minds, who also work with former SNL star Amy Poehler, was too good to miss.
The pilot also earned critical praise, which E! News asked Samberg about. "I frankly was not expecting it to go so well. It's been really nice! For some reason I'm really checked out about stressing about it,” he said, adding that it’s now up to viewers to tune in.
Samberg also joked about Cyrus, who is hosting and performing on the Oct. 8 episode of SNL. “I used to be [Miley Cyrus]' twerkologist,” he said. “I've severed ties with her in that regard…I've kind of been aware of twerking a lot longer than the mainstream media quite frankly, and now it's getting drilled into the dirt now. It's a little bit boring for me.”
He added that it doesn’t surprise him that she’s going to do SNL. “She was on SNL a couple of times when I was there and was very sweet and always very complimentary of stuff I have done, so I appreciate her,” he said.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiers on Sept. 17.
