Cosmo Allegretti, who performed on the CBS children’s show Captain Kangaroo, died last month in Phoenix at the age of 86.
According to The New York Times, Allegretti’s lawyer, John Munzel, confirmed that he died on July 26. His death was not reported until Wednesday.
Allegretti played key role on Captain Kangaroo with Bob Keeshan, who played the Captain on the show, which debuted on Oct. 3, 1955. The show featured puppets, guest stars, books read aloud and songs. It ran until 1984, notes The Los Angeles Times.
Allegretti started on the show as a set painter, but he soon became a puppeteer and voice actor. He created the Dancing Bear and voiced several other characters after he replaced a performer the producers were unhappy with. Keeshan died in 2004 and co-star Hugh Brannum (Mr. Green Jeans) died in 1987.
On Broadway, Allegretti starred in a 1985 production of Requiem for a Heavyweight and appeared in the films Author! Author! and Prince of the City. He was married briefly to singer Carol Lawrence. His second marriage, to Ilolya Korody, ended in divorce.
Allegretti is survived by son Peter and two grandchildren.
