Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ sets Billboard Hot 100 mark for 2013

Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” has been the song of the summer, thanks to the buzz generated from its R-rated uncensored video and its catchy lyrics. Unsurprisingly, the track has dominated Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, scoring its seventh week at No. 1.

Billboard reported that the track has spent the more weeks at No. 1 this year than any other single. The track just beat Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” which held the position for six weeks. However, “Thrift Shop”’s run was nonconsecutive, since the “Harlem Shake” did score five weeks at No. 1.

The last time a solo male artist held the spot this long was just last year, when Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” spent eight weeks at No. 1.

“Blurred Lines” is also No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart for a third week. Nielsen BDS tracking shows that the song had 197.7 million all-format audience impressions in the past week. That’s the second-highest weekly audience for a track since Nielsen started tracking the number in 1990. (Mariah Carey’s "We Belong Together” scored 212.2 million in July 2005.)

The song was also No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart again this past week.

“Blurred Lines” has been a mainstream success, despite some criticism of the lyrics and its racy video. But when a Bill Clinton mash-up with a song surfaces, you know it’s a big hit.
